My Pillow Benefits and Criticism

My Pillow Mattress Toppers are designed to make less comfortable beds feel better and promote deeper sleep by adding a layer of supportive foam on top of the original mattress. It includes two types of foam; a softer, contouring layer and a firm layer for support. For the most part, it seems to work as intended – it’s a nice additional cushion and it can help with problematic beds. The company; however, has faced some problems, and there are a good selection of less expensive alternatives on the market now that do the same thing as well, if not better.

MyPillow Lawsuit Settlements and Better Business Bureau F Rating:

MyPillow was sued and eventually settled for overstating its medical claims and incorrectly advertising its promotions. In its original infomercials, MyPillow advertised its pillow products by saying they would help or cure a range of medical problems without evidence that they actually worked. The suit was eventually settled for $1,095,000 in civil penalties. They also settled a class action lawsuit challenging the appropriateness of the marketing, packaging, BOGO promotions, and the use of third party endorsements and logos.

Because of their advertising practices, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) also downgraded their A+ Rating to an F. This is because of the way they market their normal prices as “limited time offers,” advertising a different pillow on their packaging than the pillow in the box, advertising a limited warranty as a full warranty, and other consumer complaints.

If you’re still interested in grabbing a My Pillow brand topper for your mattress, that’s fine! It will probably help you sleep better and more comfortably than a standard mattress alone. At the same time, there are some better rated and less expensive alternatives out there that will do the same thing for less money – to see more, read on.

Gel and Memory Foam Toppers

Memory foam is a firm, stretchy material that gets softer as your body warms it up. It changes to match your shape better than normal mattress material, and can be more comfortable over time because of the support it provides. Most memory foam also holds heat more than a standard mattress – this can be a good or bad thing depending on how warm you like to be while sleeping.

If feeling too hot during sleep is a concern, try gel-infused foam. It’s springier and softer and can be much cooler on a warm night. Some of the toppers have gel running through the whole pad, while others have a gel foam layer on top of normal memory foam.

Material: Gel infused memory foam

Thickness: 3” topper

Warranty: 3 year manufacturer

Pros:

The best things about the Linenspa topper are that it’s comfortable, highly-reviewed, and a queen size costs less than $100.

If you’re looking for a cooler gel topper, this is a really good choice. The material is CertiPUR-US certified, which means it meets that it’s high-quality memory foam made with no harmful chemicals, and the product is backed by a 3-year warranty. It can be trimmed to fit uncomfortable beds of any size, including RV mattresses and other stiff bedding.

When deciding on the thickness, look at how firm you like your mattress. The 2” topper will give you a firm but supported feel, the 3” will allow you to sink into the mattress more, and the 4” will be a very soft surface.

Cons:

Like all memory and gel foam, this needs a day or two to air-out before use, otherwise there’s a smell. Leave it unrolled for up to 48 hours to get rid of the odor.

Material: Memory Foam

Thickness: 2” topper

Warranty: 3 year manufacturer

Pros:

Lucid’s memory foam mattress topper is designed with five different textures to create “zones” of comfort for different parts of the body. This makes it a little bit thicker or thinner in different spots to provide extra support around the joints and less pressure on sensitive areas. It comes infused with a lavender smell that’s strong out of the box, but relatively mild once it’s had a chance to air out.

Cons:

The texture makes this topper more delicate and prone to ripping than some of the others. To get the longest use out of it, put two fitted sheets over the top – one for cleaning, and one to hold it in place. The less it’s moved, the longer it should last.

Material: Gel Memory Foam and Down-alternative Pillow Top

Thickness: 2” memory foam and 2” Pillow Top

Warranty: 10 year limited

Pros:

If you’re looking for the comfort of a pillow top cover and the support of memory foam, this set has both at a better price than buying separately. It comes with a washable cover that fits over both pieces, which makes for easier cleaning and a longer-lasting product. The toppers can be used together for 4” of support, or separately if you and your sleep-mate prefer different levels of firmness.

Cons:

Because the pillow top is so soft, It’s better for softening up a firm mattress than adding extra firmness to a soft one. If you need a fair bit of extra support, you’ll probably do better with just memory foam/gel foam.

Quilted and Pillow Top Mattress Toppers

These toppers are made with a soft, plush filling, usually a down alternative material, to provide extra softness and comfort to your mattress. They’re used by a lot of hotel chains to make the beds feel more luxurious, so if you enjoy the plush feel when traveling, a quilted topper may be a good choice.

Material: Microfiber down alternative

Thickness: 2” pad

Warranty: 10 year limited

Pros:

This antibacterial topper is hypoallergenic, meaning you’re less likely to have a reaction to the materials than normal bedding. It attaches with anchor bands for a tight hold to your mattress and can be machine washed and dried for convenience.

Cons:

Plush toppers tend to be warmer to sleep on than a material like gel foam.

Material: Microfiber

Thickness: 1” pad

Warranty: Not specified

Pros:

This is a good quality, low cost topper that comes with a mattress pad (mattress pads are designed to protect your mattress and go between the fitted sheet and base). It’s hypoallergenic, fully machine washable, and fits over mattresses up to 18” deep. The filling is designed to retain less heat than other pillow tops, making it more comfortable for use in the spring and summer.

Cons:

It’s thinner than the other toppers and provides less support. It can be a nice addition if you’re mostly happy with your mattress, but if you need to boost a less comfortable mattress there are better choices.
